A swing gate hangs on hinges and opens like a door, as one leaf or a pair meeting in the middle. An automatic one is pushed and pulled by a swing-arm operator on the post or a linear (piston-style) actuator mounted along the leaf. Most swing gate trouble comes from the weight of the leaf: hinges wear, posts lean, the leaf sags and drags, and the operator strains until it stops or reverses. On double gates the two leaves can drift out of step, so they clash or won't latch. We connect you with independent local gate pros who repair swing gates and their operators.

Sound familiar?
- Leaf sags and drags at the latch end
- Double gate leaves clash, overlap or won't meet
- Swing arm or linear actuator bracket bent or loose
- Gate swings open or closed by itself in the wind
- Hinge squeals, pops or has worn through
- Gate opens one way fine but struggles on slopes or in the cold
What a gate tech typically checks
- Hinges, hinge post and footing
- How the leaf hangs, clears the drive and latches
- Operator arm or actuator, its mounting brackets and pivot points
- Leaf delay and sync settings on double gates
- Limit and force settings, plus photo eyes across the swing path
Before you call
- Single or double swing, and which way it opens (into the property or out)
- Swing-arm or linear (piston) operator, and the brand and model if you can see the label
- Photos of the hinges, the operator and where the leaf drags
- Whether the driveway slopes up or down from the gate
Questions
Why do my double gates hit each other when they close?
Many dual-gate operators close one leaf a moment before the other so they meet in the right order. If that delay setting has changed, a leaf has started to sag, or one operator is weaker than the other, the leaves can clash or fail to latch. Don't keep cycling it. A pro can re-hang the leaf and reset the delay and limits.
My swing gate is on a slope. Does that matter?
Yes. A gate that swings uphill needs enough ground clearance for its whole arc, and frost or settling can make it drag where it used to clear. Some sloped drives suit a different hinge setup or a sliding gate better. Ask the pro what fits your drive.
