What's out there
The City of St. Louis has few long gated driveways, but plenty of gates. Its private streets, many marked by ornamental entrance gates and stone piers, sit alongside alley-side parking gates behind brick flats, courtyard and entry gates on apartment buildings, and slide gates and barrier arms on business, church and school lots from South City to the Central West End.
What St. Louis City calls are about
- Private-street entrance gates that won't open, close or latch
- Alley-side parking gates behind flats and condos
- Apartment and condo entry gates with keypads or call boxes
- Business and church lot slide gates and barrier arms
- Old ornamental iron gates with cracked welds or worn hinges
Good to know
St. Louis is known for its private places: residential streets owned and maintained by their residents' associations. For an entrance gate on one, the request should come from the trustee or association contact who can approve the work.
Much of the City is in historic districts. If a repair would change the look of a street-facing gate or fence, check with the City's Cultural Resources Office first. Like-for-like repairs usually aren't the issue.
Alley gates take a beating from trash trucks and tight turns. Photos of the hinge side and the operator arm help the pro bring the right parts.
